Hotel Bedding Thread Count: 160TC vs 210TC vs 300TC Explained

The thread count myth has confused hotel buyers for years. Consumer marketing suggests that higher is always better — but in hospitality procurement, durability and consistent feel across hundreds of laundry cycles matters far more than a marketing number. Here is what actually matters.

What Does Thread Count Actually Mean?

Thread count (TC) is the number of threads woven per square inch of fabric — both horizontally (weft) and vertically (warp). A 210TC sheet has 210 threads per square inch.

In consumer retail, thread count became a marketing shorthand for quality. The reality is more nuanced: a 160TC sheet made from long-staple Turkish cotton with a tight percale weave can outperform a 400TC sheet made from low-grade multi-ply yarn. For hotel buyers, the weave, fibre quality and construction matter as much as the thread count number.

For hospitality use specifically, thread counts between 160TC and 300TC cover the full range from budget hostel to luxury boutique. Anything beyond 300TC is rarely practical for high-turnover hotel laundry environments.

160TC: The Workhorse of Hotel Housekeeping

160TC linen has a crisp, cool feel — typical of a percale weave. It is lighter, easier to launder at high temperatures, and dries quickly. For properties that change linen daily or run very high occupancy, 160TC is the practical choice.

Best suited for

  • 2–3 star hotels with high turnover
  • Hostels, dormitories and budget properties
  • Properties with on-site laundry seeking fastest cycle times
  • Holiday rentals and serviced apartments on tight margins

Cost-per-use advantage: 160TC linen is the most affordable option and handles aggressive laundry chemistry well. For a 100-room hotel washing linen daily, the lower initial cost and faster laundry throughput deliver meaningful operational savings.

210TC: The European Hotel Industry Standard

210TC is the most commonly specified thread count across European mid-market hotels. It strikes the right balance: soft enough for guest comfort, durable enough for commercial laundering, and priced appropriately for B2B procurement budgets.

Best suited for

  • 3–4 star hotels across Europe
  • B&Bs and guesthouses targeting comfort-conscious guests
  • Aparthotels and extended stay properties
  • Properties looking for a reliable, consistent mid-market specification

Our 210TC range is available in flat sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases and complete bed linen sets. See the full bed linen catalog.

210TC Satin: A Luxury Feel at a Mid-Tier Price

The same thread count as standard 210TC, but with a sateen weave instead of percale. The difference is immediately noticeable: sateen has more threads on the surface, creating a silkier, slightly shiny finish that feels noticeably more premium.

Percale vs. Sateen: Percale (used in standard 160TC and 210TC) has a one-under-one-over weave, creating a matte, crisp finish. Sateen has a four-over-one-under weave, exposing more threads on the surface for a smooth, almost silky hand-feel. Sateen is slightly less durable than percale under heavy commercial laundering but performs well at standard hotel laundry temperatures.

Best suited for

  • Boutique hotels seeking premium room aesthetics on a controlled budget
  • Design-led properties where linen appearance matters
  • 3–4 star hotels wanting to differentiate from standard competitors
  • Apartments and serviced residences targeting longer-term guests

300TC: For Luxury and Boutique Properties

300TC linen is noticeably softer and denser than 210TC. The higher thread density creates a smoother surface and a more substantial feel — tangibly different to guests who have experienced both. At this specification, the quality of cotton used becomes critical; 300TC made from inferior short-staple cotton will pill and degrade faster than 210TC made from long-staple Turkish cotton.

Best suited for

  • 4–5 star hotels where linen quality is a guest experience priority
  • Boutique and independent hotels competing on room comfort
  • Serviced apartments targeting corporate long-stay guests
  • Properties that change linen every 2–3 days rather than daily

300TC linen costs more per unit, but the replacement frequency is lower if properly laundered — and the guest perception uplift can justify the premium through review scores and repeat bookings.
